How to Keep Your Browser on Top with TopWindow

Step 1: Download and Install TopWindow

Download TopWindow from topwindow.app/download. The app is compatible with all Macs running macOS 12 or newer, including Apple Silicon and Intel models.

Step 2: Grant Permissions

When you first launch TopWindow, macOS will ask for Accessibility permissions. Follow the prompt to grant access — this allows TopWindow to control your browser window position.

Step 3: Select Your Browser Window

Click on the browser window you want to keep on top. This can be Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, or any other browser.

Step 4: Pin It

Press Option + Command + P. Your browser window will immediately float above all other windows.

Browser-Specific Tips

Chrome

TopWindow works with all Chrome windows, including incognito mode and Chrome-based browsers like Brave, Arc, Edge, and Vivaldi. You can also use Chrome Picture-in-Picture for videos if you prefer a smaller floating player.

Safari

Safari users can pin any Safari window on top. This is especially useful when reading an article or watching a video and taking notes in another app. Safari also supports Picture-in-Picture for videos.

Firefox & Edge

Both Firefox and Edge are fully supported. TopWindow works with any browser because it operates at the macOS window level, not within the browser itself.

YouTube & Video

For YouTube and other video sites, you have two options: use Picture-in-Picture for just the video player, or use TopWindow to keep the entire browser tab on top. TopWindow is better when you need to see comments, playlists, or controls alongside the video.

Why Use TopWindow Instead of Picture-in-Picture

While Picture-in-Picture (PiP) is useful for videos, it has limitations:

  • PiP only works with video content
  • You cannot interact with the page while the video is in PiP mode
  • Some websites do not support PiP

TopWindow works with the full browser window — keeping everything visible and interactive, not just the video.
